It has been a few days since I went to watch Alice Through The Looking Glass, and I have decided that it is time now to write down all of my thoughts.
As many of you know, I am a massive fan of Alice In Wonderland, so the thought of a sequel to the Alice In Wonderland (2010) film, was very exciting.
However, this time around Tim Burton is taking only a producing credit, and handing over the directorial reins to James Bobin (Muppets Most Wanted), who actually improves on Burton’s original ideas and topping the original designs with an inventive touches that pay true homage to Lewis Carroll’s masterpiece.
The film looks sparkling, and very detailed. However, I do think that it took over a bit too much of the film, and became a bit distracting. It’s clever, delightful throughout and generally perfect, even though in my opinion it does not compare to the original. The newest character portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen as Time, is a fantastic addition, but sometimes his kind of comedy does not work for me.
It seems Alice (Mia Wasikowska) has been off sailing the high seas for a few years, but when she gets back to London it is not long before the discovery of a magic crystal sets her back off to Underland, where she reunites with old friends. Mirana (Anne Hathaway) sets her off on a mission to time travel back and save Hatter. This is where she encounters Time.
Of course most of the original cast return to join Wasikowska, Depp, Bonham Carter, and Hathaway including voice actors Michael Sheen, Stephen Fry, Alan Rickman (to whom the film is dedicated), and Timothy Spall among others. The production, music and all other aspects of the film are magnificent. However, it sometimes does not match the quality of the original.
Overall I would give it a 7/10!
It is well worth a watch, and a lot better than expected.
